Katherine Van Tiem
Katherine Van Tiem currently works as District Director for Congressman Mike Bishop (MI-08). Katherine managed Congressman Bishop’s 2014 congressional campaign and Congressman Rogers’ 2012 re-election campaign. Katherine is a 2005 graduate of Central Michigan University, and a 2008 graduate of The Thomas M. Cooley Law School. After earning her law degree, Katherine practiced law in Southeast Michigan until joining Congressman Rogers’ campaign team in 2012. Her practice focused primarily on estate planning, planning for individuals with special needs, and elder law.
Kat McKowell is a Family Nurse Practitioner with 14 years of experience in the health care industry. She is a graduate of Oakland University’s Master of Science in nursing program. Kat has dedicated much of her career to working with underserved populations. Prior to joining the Board of Director’s, she volunteered for Excel for over a year. In her spare time, she enjoys singing and playing guitar, cooking, and gardening. Kat participates annually in Food Gatherer’s Plant-a-row for the Hungry program. She currently resides in Ann Arbor with her dog, cat, and husband, not necessarily in that order.
Amel is currently an accountant working with the public accounting firm UHY LLP. Amel’s prior accounting experience includes working as a cost accountant for a Fortune 500 company and as an accounting teaching assistant at Wayne State University. He obtained his Master of Business Administration degree from Wayne State University. When he’s not working or studying for his CPA exam, Amel enjoys fishing, hiking, and spending time with his family.
Nicholas Kowalski was recruited to join the Excel Board of Directors after serving as a Peer Support Specialist in Livingston County. Nicholas began his journey with Excel as a consumer but quickly transitioned into a role in which he could provide support to his peers. Nicholas participated in training through Livingston County Community Mental Health and in a 6 month program on leadership and advocacy through ARC of Livingston in 2015. Nicholas uses his own experiences as a person with a disability to provide guidance to others and is a voice for this population in the community and on Excel’s board of directors. In his free time he enjoys reading, movies, sports and being with his loved ones.
Maureen D’Agostino is Principal at MBD Consulting, LLC. She is a Senior Healthcare Executive with a history of success in transformational team building and leadership within a large multi-hospital and ambulatory health system. Strong visionary and strategic skills with demonstrated ability to achieve positive results in quality improvement, accreditation and regulatory environments, including implementation of evidenced based practices and operational integration of multiple departments. An engaging leader with an effective interpersonal communication style and contemporary approaches to team building, leadership, and change management. During her twenty-five years at Beaumont Health and Oakwood Healthcare, D’Agostino was Senior Vice President of Performance Excellence. As executive, she encompassed survey readiness for Joint Commission, CMS and other credentialing organizations; corporate safety, emergency management; Service Excellence and policy and procedures. She was also the Executive Director of the Center for Exceptional Families, a multi-disciplinary medical home for physically and mentally challenged children and the Executive Director of the Corporate Services Building in Dearborn. Using Baldrige Performance Excellence criteria she created Oakwood’s business model D’Agostino is an alumni examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award program and leads team application reviews and site visits. She also holds multiple certifications in emergency preparedness. She is on the board of directors of Inforum, formerly the Women’s Economic Club of Detroit and is president of Excel Employment Options, a nonprofit that mainstreams physically, emotionally and mentally challenged individuals into the workplace.
Diann is the Advocacy and Community Resource Director at The Arc Western Wayne County, providing direct advocacy to people with disabilities in securing services. She also runs the After I'm Gone Project, The Take Charge Helpline, works closely with the sibling network, and facilitates Person Centered Plans. Diann also provides Supports Coordination to four families in Oakland County
Larry has 38 years’ experience in Mental Health from direct care, case management, contracting & payment, to a manager of a vocational service department. Masters-Educational Psychology - Wayne State University, and is currently retired and volunteers his time helping restore historic landmarks in Detroit.
Patrice joined Oakwood Healthcare in 1998 as Legal Counsel. She now serves as Senior Associate General Counsel for Oakwood’s new parent company, Beaumont Health. She provides legal advice to management on issues related to labor and employment law. In 2015 and 2017, Patrice was recognized by DBusiness Magazine as one of metro Detroit’s “Top Corporate Counsel.” She received her law degree and her B.A. in Public Affairs from Wayne State University. After law school, Patrice joined a local law firm as an associate attorney, where she began her labor and employment law practice representing a wide variety of private and public sector employers. In her free time Patrice enjoys hiking, yoga and live theatre.
