Job Description and Expectations
Direction: The board guards the mission of the organization and, through guidelines, steers it in the right direction
Oversight: The board monitors activities, the health, and the ethical behavior in the organization
Resources: The board ensures that the organization is well-equipped to fulfill its mission, adequate finances, capable staff and esteemed reputation.
Mission or purpose statement: The board’s mission is to ensure the long term ability of this organization to provide best-in-class services by focusing on long term funding sources and by enhancing public recognition. This requires us to position the organization strategically to best respond to the critical needs of people with disabilities and their families.
Determine mission and purposes. It is the board’s responsibility to create and review a statement of mission and purpose that articulates the organization’s goals, means, and primary constituents it serves.
Select the ED. Boards must reach consensus on the ED’S responsibilities and undertake a careful search to find the most qualified individual for the position.
Support and evaluate the ED. The board should ensure that the ED has the moral and professional support he or she needs to further the goals of the organization.
Ensure effective planning. Boards must actively participate in an overall planning process and assist in implementing and monitoring plan’s goals.
Monitor and strengthen programs and services. To determine which programs are consistent with the organizations mission and monitor their effectiveness.
Ensure adequate financial resources. The board’s foremost responsibility is to provide adequate resources for the organization to fulfill its mission.
Protect assets and provide financial oversight. The board must assist in developing the annual budget and ensuring that proper financial controls are in place
Build a competent board. All boards have a responsibility to articulate prerequisites for candidates, orient new members, and periodically and comprehensively evaluate their own performance.
Ensure legal and ethical integrity. The board is ultimately responsible for adherence to legal standards and ethical norms.
Enhance the organizations public standing. The board should clearly articulate the organizations mission, accomplishments, and goals to the public and garner support from the community.
Length of term: Three years, which may be renewed up to a maximum of three consecutive terms, pending approval of the board.
Meetings and time commitment:
• The board of directors meets a minimum of three times a year; from 4:30 to 6:30 typically at our Southfield office
• Committees of the board meet an average of four times per year, pending their respective work agenda.
• Board members are asked to attend special events, fundraisers or meetings, as they are determined.
Expectations of board members:
• Attend and participate in meetings on a regular basis, and special events as able.
• Participate on a standing committee of the board, and serve on ad-hoc committees as necessary.
• Be alert to community concerns that can be addressed by Excel’s mission, objectives, and programs.
